A quick factchecking of yet another list of “misandrist” quotes reveals the same old MRA sloppiness and dishonesty

The MRAs have a new list! A list of evil, man-hating quotations, that is. This list, put together by A Voice for Male Students, has a rather pretentious title: “The language of misandry in academia: a collection of quotes by faculty members, students, and administrators.”

And it comes with a rather high-minded introduction by list-collator Jonathan Taylor, declaring that

misandry in academia is not merely a collection of infrequent and disassociated anomalies arising from individuals uninfluenced by supportive or acquiescent peer groups. On the contrary, it is culturally pervasive in academia in a way that cannot be reasonably characterized as incidental or coincidental.

Indeed, Taylor hopes that his list will be

a useful resource for those new to men’s issues in academia. It should also be useful to advocates as a “go-to” resource for identifying and referring others the kind of hostile learning environment that has become pervasive in certain academic circles.

Given all this, you might expect his list of quotes to be a little more carefully vetted than the typical cut-and-pasted lists of Terrible Feminist Quotes that are passed around on the internet by antifeminists. You may recall that when I and a few others fact-checked one of these lists a while back we discovered that many of the quotes were either taken out of context in a misleading way, or made up, or taken from fictional works. Or were from people no one had ever heard of an who might not have been feminists at all.

Even a quick glance at Taylor’s list reveals that it has a lot in common with these lists: alongside a number of quotations from well-known radical feminists like Catharine MacKinnon and Mary Daly, he includes quotes from little-known academics and an assortment of random student activists, one of them identified only as “Ginny.” How typical are any of these views in academia? Taylor makes no attempt to find out.

The list doesn’t confine itself to feminists, quoting from one “traditionalist women’s college group” and even from Margaret Thatcher.

And many of the quotes are scanty — simple one liners — which leads me to wonder if there is anything in the context that makes these sometimes shocking quotations a bit less shocking.

Still others aren’t actually “misandrist” at all.

I don’t have the time or the energy to fact-check all of these quotes — nor do I have access to the academic journals many of them came from.

But several of them grabbed my attention, and I was able to track down the original quotes in context — only to discover that Taylor’s abridged quotes completely distort their original meanings.

Let’s start with this truncated quote from Marilyn French:

“As long as some men use physical force to subjugate females, all men need not. The knowledge that some men do suffices to threaten all women. He can beat or kill the woman he claims to love; he can rape women…he can sexually molest his daughters… THE VAST MAJORITY OF MEN IN THE WORLD DO ONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE.”

This seems shocking: Is French really suggesting that the vast majority of men either beat, rape, or kill women and/or molest their own daughters?

Actually, no. Those little ellipses in the quote are a clue that there’s more to the story here. When you look at what French actually wrote, you can see that her claims are not actually shocking at all. Here’s the original quote, which you can find for yourself by looking up the book on Amazon and going to page 182 of the preview available on the site.

As long as some men use physical force to subjugate females, all men need not.  The knowledge that some men do suffices to threaten all women.  Beyond that, it is not necessary to beat up a woman to beat her down.  A man can simply refuse to hire women in well-paid jobs, extract as much or more work from women than men but pay them less, or treat women disrespectfully at work or at home.  He can fail to support a child he has engendered, demand the woman he lives with wait on him like a servant.  He can beat or kill the woman he claims to love, he can rape women, whether mate, acquaintance, or stranger; he can rape or sexually molest his daughters, nieces, stepchildren, or the children of a woman he claims to love.  The vast majority of men in the world do one or more of the above

As you can see, French’s argument is completely different from what the truncated quote would suggest. But quoting a feminist suggesting that the majority of men might “treat women disrespectfully” isn’t very exciting, is it? Let’s pretend she said something hair-raising instead!

It’s clear that Taylor didn’t get the quote from French’s book directly; when I searched for the quote online, I found the exact same truncated version, with the same ellipses and the same CAPITAL LETTERS on an assortment of right-wing and antifeminist sites, in one case attributed to the wrong book by French. Clearly he got the quote from one of these sites — Conservapedia, perhaps? — and didn’t bother to spend five minutes trying to fact-check it as I did. It’s also pretty clear that whoever edited the original quote down did so in a deliberate attempt to misrepresent what French said.

The next bit of fact-checking was a bit more straightforward, because this time Taylor provided a clickable link to the source on Google Books. Here’s the quote:

“Politically, I call it rape whenever a woman has sex and feels violated.”

Curious about the context, I clicked on the link and saw that she was defining rape in this way as a sort of thought experiment rather than as a legal category:

While this is not quite as dramatic a misrepresentation as the chopped-up French quote, the context here changes the meaning of the quote quite dramatically.

One more quote in the list caught my eye:

Consent as ideology cannot be distinguished from habitual acquiescence, assent, silent dissent, submission, or even enforced submission. Unless refusal or consent or withdrawal of consent are real possibilities, we can no longer speak of ‘consent’ in any genuine sense.

I’m not going to bother to fact-check this one, because, well, this argument is completely reasonable: if a person cannot say “no,” or cannot withdraw consent, then we really aren’t talking about genuine consent at all, are we?

Taylor claims to be fighting “misandry” in the academy. It looks to me — in these examples, at least — like he’s fighting against straw feminists and a meaningful notion of consent.

    I’ve seen a few copies of the Watchtower, and had a few talks with the people handing them out at the time. “Why yes, I’d love to talk a moment, but I can’t stay long, I have to go meet my gay wiccan roommate and his satanist boyfriend.” type things.

    I guess the difference is I… expect Jehova’s Witnesses to twist things slightly, and not be entirely forthcoming with information outside their religious framework, but someone who goes on about “fairness” and “justice” and “equality” and “wanting to fight against stereotypes” and then linking to stuff that disproves the quotes they’re using to talk about how oppressed they are just seems so farcical.

    Jehova’s Witnesses tells you that they’d love for you to join their organization, and that they’re on a divine quest (at least, the ones I’ve talked to). MRA’s go on and on about how they’re not misogynists regressives lashing out at the world, and just want justice. At least the former is honest about their intentions.

    Why bother? Why not just write: “The idea that consent can be a questionable topic with interpretations beyond a binary “yes-no” terrifies me, and I’d love to make it not be so, because then I know the moment someone says: “yes” to sleeping with me, I can stake an instant claim to their netherparts forever! Women suck!”? There’s no overarching political, religious or social framework to support with all this elaborate, futile source-turbating, they don’t actually have any goals beyond “Screw women, right lads”, but just bloody saying so is too much effort, apparently.

    ARGH.

    Thank you, yeah. You’re utterly right. And reminded me how to spell verisimilitude, for which I am thankful!

  2. One thing I notice though is the things I’ve read from second wave feminists don’t imply that rape and violence is something that is natural in men.

    Apart from MRAs’ crap about women being naturally this or that, the irony is that they do talk about men as natrual rapists. Any suggestion that men not foist their attentions where they’re not wanted is called an attack on male sexuality. Everything they demand the right to do to women boils down to sexual assault of a greater or lesser degree, however much they then squeal about how cruel it is to depict all men as rapists.

    MRAs (or too many of them) want to rape, all right: they just don’t want the word used, they want it to have such a vanishingly narrow meaning that their own crimes are never called that - at least by anyone else.

    This one’s interesting. The quote implies that false accusations are a good thing, because they serve to balance the pain that rape survivors feel. That’s not how the full thing came across to me.
    So a guy’s name is put up on a poster, identifying him as “Rapist of the Month.” Apparently it’s a false accusation - he hasn’t dated, doesn’t drink or do drugs, which apparently means he couldn’t have raped someone… not sure I see the connection there, but ok. Accusation rhetorically accepted as false. Supposedly it’s a case of mistaken identity - right first name, wrong last name.
    There’s discussion of the matter - it’s ruined the guy’s life, he won’t be able to date without the person he’s dating wondering if he’s a rapist, tensions are high. And here’s where the quote comes in:

    Nearby, sophomore Emily Lloyd says men are missing the point.
    “So many women get their lives totally ruined by being assaulted and not saying anything. So if one guy gets his life ruined, maybe it balances it.”
    The man next to her, a long haired freshman in glasses disagrees.
    “All I can think is what would I do if my name was up there on that sign?” he says. “What would I do?”
    Ms. Lloyd shoots back: “Do you know what you’d do if you were raped?”
    There is a tense silence as the freshman studies the grass in front of him. Finally, he looks up.
    “Well. I know one thing,” he says, “I wouldn’t put up a sign.”

    So… the feeling I get is this: You guys are outraged that this person was falsely accused. I get that, his life is ruined, it’s awful. Where’s your outrage when people are raped?
    I don’t think this counts as misandry,* I don’t think it counts as false rape accusation apologetics, or whatever that would be called either. It’s calling bullshit on caring about falsely accused men when you don’t care when people are raped.

    *Certainly not misandry in academia - the opinions of a student, even the vocal opinions don’t count as academia. Nor do the opinions of professors and university administrators for that matter. Academia is the part where studying happens. The research, the investigation. Not the private opinions of some of the researchers and their students.

    I… don’t get what’s misandrist about this?
    Oh, right, “there’s no way to distinguish between consensual sex and rape,” therefore, “all sex is rape.” Gotcha. (Ok, maybe that’s a strawman, maybe, but it’s the only path I could make to misandry.)
    Except… there’s no clear distinction between black and white in this picture… yet I can quite clearly see that one side is bright white, while the other is pitch black. It’s almost as if Dr Kelly is simply pointing out the fact that the borders between consensual sex and rape are blurred by societal attitudes. Essentially, she’s saying that rape can be subtle and manipulative, as well as brutal and forceful… which is true. Are statements of truth misandry now? Hmm…

    Outside the groves of academe, however, the subject of rape is everywhere. Comedians love it. “It is impossible to rape a woman. Any woman with her skirt up can run faster than a man with his pants down.” Novelists, especially “frank, realistic” novelists thrive on it. It is almost impossible to pick up a pornographic book without encountering at least one rape scene; it combines the magic elements, sex and violence. Moreover, pornography is a record of male fantasies, and rape is perhaps the foremost male fantasy in our society. In one form or another, explicitly or more subtly, this fantasy permeates most of what is written, filmed, and sun about love and sex between men and women.
    A simple - though, if you think about it, striking - example of how the rape fantasy appears in its more subtle form is the scene straight out of every old movie you’ve seen. The same scene appears in soap operas on television, in serious drama and films, even in Shakespeare, with only slight variations. A man and a woman are having an argument. The woman is beautiful and strong-willed; the man can be almost anyone. As the argument progresses, the woman becomes angrier. The man wavers between anger and amusement.     Although this is nothing more than a kiss, the pattern is there. The man subdues the woman by forcing her to submit to him sexually, and she loves it. This is the appeal of the rape fantasy. As Ruth Hershberger pointed out in a penetrating essay entitled “Is Rape a Myth?”: When the man turns to the sensational image of rape, he learns of a sex act which, if effected with any unwilling woman, can force her to enter into a sexual relationship with him. She can be forced into a psychological intimacy with him, as his wife stubbornly is not. Thus in the dream world of gross aggression, the husband finds the same unwilling woman of his marriage situation. But in the rape victim the unwilling woman magically becomes willing, her sensory nerves respond gratefully, stubborn reflexes react obediently, and the beautiful stranger willy-nilly enters into a state of sexual intimacy with her aggressor.

    I wonder if there’s one quote that actually represents real misandry on that page? I’ll let one of you find it, because I’m drained and sleepy now.

  7. Athywren - the real joke with that “false accusation = man’s life is ruined” scenario is that it’s so. fucking. unlikely. that any man will have his life ruined by it. How many of the tiny minority of actual rapists who get arrested, let alone tried, have their lives ruined? Not bloody many. Nothing like the trauma inflicted on so many victims. Look at that utter shit Adrian Bailey: not imprisoned for life until his multiple rapes escalated to raping and murdering Jill Meagher a year ago.

    Fuck the idea that being accused of rape equals ruining a man’s life.

  8. Also, I’m kinda bemused by the whole “rape fantasies are a thing!” quote. Uh, yeah. Last I heard, they were common. The problem comes when people can’t differentiate between fantasy and reality, not that they have fantasies at all.

    The quoted sections of text in this have some flaws. I have attempted to format and point those out. I would appreciate, and urge, any reader taking the time to actually read this article for quotes about misandry in academia to make use of the corrected, actual quotes.

    You have stripped out the initial sentence, which reads: “”To use the word carefully would be to be careful for the sake of the violator, and the survivors don’t care a hoot about him.”, explaining that Dr. Catherine Comins position isn’t one of “Suckit, males”, but “Being careful with the word rape also means being careful with the person who did the raping”.
    Her position and idea, as quoted, is still stupifiyingly odd, something that same article calls out in the very next sentence:
    “Taken to extremes, there is an ugly element of vengeance at work here. Rape , is an abuse of power. But so are false accusations of rape, and to suggest that men whose reputations are destroyed might benefit because it will make them more sensitive is an attitude that is sure to backfire on women who are seeking justice for all victims. On campuses where the issue is most inflamed, male students are outraged that their names can be scrawled on a bathroom-wall list of rapists and they have no chance to tell their side of the story.”
    Odd choice of quote. Why? I found these more meaningful myself:

    Yeah. And that same person has a history of making inane statements. Here’s another choice quote, from 2005: “”the criminal justice system is not the sole arbiter of truth.”

    Odd how people with a grudge will keep making the same statements about things they have a grudge against. Murphy’s beef ain’t men, Murphy has a problem with the concept of basic due process and justice.

    This is from the same Time article. The descriptive paragraph before the quote explains the reasoning behind the quote. Why did you strip that out? It reads:
    “In her view, rape is a subjective term, one that women must use to draw attention to other, nonviolent, even nonsexual forms of oppression.”
    So Ginny does not have a problem with all men everywhere, Ginny has a problem with expressing herself without using trite metaphors and odd analogues, whatever else kind of wonderful person she might be.
    Why did you leave out the text bit explaining that?

    Incidentally, the article also reads: “The school administration considers the display “inappropriate” and an error in judgment, Mr. King said, but the case also raises thorny issues about free speech.”, so the misandric atmosphere you are insinuating exists at Maryland with this quote is the same terrible, anti-male place where the… administration points out what an utterly terrible idea this all was?

    … Yes? I’m sorry, but I fail to find why this quote was included in a compiliation of quotes on misandry in academia. It’s neither targeted specifically at men, referencing a state of affairs where men are evil, or even saying anything particularly outrageous. Rape is problematic, and completely clear lines are hard to establish.
    The actual quote, from the actual book, available on Google Books, also emphasizes this fact, because it reads as follows:
    “… [Interviewee:] “I remember an occasion where he wouldn’t let me get up, and he was very strong. He pulled my arms above my head, I didn’t put up much of a struggle. I mean I wouldn’t have seen that as rape because I associated rape with strangers, dark, night and struggle. I didn’t put up much of a struggle, but I didn’t want to, so in a sense that was rape, yes. …
    The examples demonstrate that many women experience non-consensual sex which neither they nor the law and, even more unlikely, the man, define as rape. Women do, however, feel abused by such experiences and a number of women recalled short-term and long-term effects that were similar to those experienced by women who defined their experiences as rape at the time. There is no clear distinction, therefore, between consensual sex and rape, but a continuum of pressure, threat, coercion and force. The concept of a continuum validates the sense of abuse women feel when they do not freely consent to sex and takes account of the fact that women may not define their experience at the time or over time as rape”

    No comments but that one, really. Kind of odd you didn’t include the year of publication.

    The full quote reads:

    Did you read your own links before quoting from them? This isn’t “All men rape”, this is, again, “Rape exists as a thing that can be difficult to describe yet practiced under many different circumstances”

    See? People even say that, and write about it, and think so too, because as an actual point of fucking fact, describing rape as “A continuum of pressures” makes a lot of sense. Sorry for swearing just then, but I’m not used to people providing quotes from linked sources yet have the quotes say the opposite of what they’re claimed to say.

    The actual quote reads:
    “Politically, I call it rape whenever a woman has sex and feels violated. You might think that’s too broad. I’m not talking about sending all you men to jail for that. I’m talking about attempting to change the nature of relations between women and men by having women ask ourselves, “Did I feel violated”? To me, part of the culture of sexual inequality that makes women not report rape is that the definition of rape is not based on our sense of our violation”.
    Someone specifically says she doesn’t want to send all men to jail, and you still use it as an example of academic misandry?

    “Then there are the wolf-whistles, unwanted hugs and pinches – what the authors of one book call “mini-rapes” – which continually remind women they are vulnerable, sexual victims.”

    Notes to the above quote: while it is clear by reading their book that Drs. Gordon and Reiger support this view, it is also clear that they are referencing a chapter called “Little Rapes” (see here) on page 49 of Dr. Andra Medea’s book Against Rape. In addition, in an interview among Dr. Christina Hoff-Sommers, Camille Paglia, and Ben Wattenberg on the PBS show “Think Tank” (source here), Dr. Hoff-Sommers says,
    “I interviewed a young women at the University of Pennsylvania who came in in a short skirt and she was in the Women’s Center, and I think she thought I was one of the sisterhood. And she said, ‘Oh, I just suffered a mini-rape.’ “And I said, ‘What happened?’ And she said, ‘A boy walked by me and said, `Nice legs’. ‘You know? And that — and this young woman considers this a form of rape!”

    … Sorry, I don’t find other people’s inability to express themselves without hyperbolic exaggeration a good reason to look for misandric connotations in academic literature. Rape is not a gendered crime, so unless you are insinuating somehow that a female student wearing a short skirt thinking being given a compliment is somehow the same as falsely accusing someone of rape or raping a topless dancer (as per the actual “professional rapist” quote), then I don’t see what this quote from The Female Fear, or the story with it, is doing here.

Okay, wait, I think I get it – you bolded the later, so you assume that means someone can invoke a false accusation against someone else at any time later on. That’s not actually what Liz Kelly means by that, it’s that traumatic experiences in the moment can be rationalized by a host of different excuses (“This isn’t that bad”, to pick just fucking one).

I’m not going to label any feminist who questions exactly how meaningful consent is in a patriarchy as misandrist, especially if they were writing in a time and place where spousal rape wasn’t a crime-and even now, with the conviction rates for rape so low, I’m not sure we can treat it as if it is illegal even now.     Speaking of two hours to check a single quotemine it occurs to me that this kind of thing is a modified gish gallop. You’ve got the whole “it takes them two minutes to say it, and you two hours to refute it” thing, but there’s also the element of source fatigue. You can only get so far before you just have to do something other than trawl for full quotes, and then they can fall back on all the ones you didn’t refute.     I took a woman’s history class in college (it was great. There were six students). One of the things we did was watch this “news” show from the 1960s which was all about the male newsanchors trying to figure out what the hell was going on with women that they’d suddenly decided that they didn’t just want to be wives and mothers and clearly not getting it. They showed like ten minutes of Helen Gurley Brown doing business on the phone because… I don’t know. Maybe they thought it was weird. All the other students and I were all like “WTF? Is this a parody,” and the professor (who was an older woman-maybe in her sixties?) told us that no, it was not, that that level of naked contempt for women was perfectly permissible back then.

    So I thank my foremothers for the strides they made.

    In other news, my grandmother thinks that I should “put down my cats and my knitting” and read Lean In, which has made her wish she was starting her career about now. I am in fact working full-time in science research, so…

    The cats and knitting are my hobbies. So is Nanowrimo, so I better get back to that.

  25. I got a circulating email a few years ago that listed a bunch of things that women (in the words of the email, “your mother”) didn’t have access to or had to put up with, dating back to not very freaking long ago. I’ll see if I can dig it out at work tomorrow. It boggled my mind.

    In fact, the final nail in the coffin of my (older) friend’s marriage was that her husband cleaned out her personal bank account to gamble, in about 1980. Backlash explains why, but what I find hard to understand is how that can coincide with most young people having pretty reasonable ideas about gay men, far more so than my generation does on the whole, whereas I feel like my generation actually has less toxic ideas about what it means to be a man.

    I think that’s because anti-gay bigotry has been influenced by both the patriarchy and ultraconservative religious opposition to homosexuality. The former is largely still in place in many ways, whereas the latter has been declining rapidly due to more non-religious folks, among other groups. That’s probably why you still see rigid ideas about masculinity despite the fact that homosexuality is gaining acceptance at a fast rate.

    Thing is, there have been multiple polls on this and they all show a lower level of homophobia in younger people (25 and under in some cases, teens specifically in other cases) than in older people. So even though there’s backlash I don’t think kids are where it’s coming from.

    (And if we’re talking about teens it’s not like they would have been able to vote on say Proposition 8 anyway.)

    My friend then said, “Ummm… A and B are both lesbians.”
    So good analysis hampered by picking the wrong example. (There were plenty of other women who were affectionate with each other who weren’t lesbians, but he just happened to pick the couple who made it official about three months later.)

I’ve lived in both the Middle East/North Africa and Asia, and in both cases saw far more physical affection between men than would be acceptable in the US, but part of the reason for that I think is that everyone just assumes that it couldn’t possibly mean the guys are gay.

  38. I’m in my late 20s and I noticed also that LGBT rights are thankfully more accepted now and people in my age group are more vocal in supporting them. But yes, it is odd that aside from that progress, everything else seems to be going backwards. How many times do I have to hear about how men have been “feminized” which I think is just code for men don’t have all the power anymore.

    I do think that when women became more or less liberated, men were still stuck behind in their gender role. But this also makes sense because women’s gender roles were always more constricting in that they actually had less rights and freedoms than men- so of course they would fight for something men already had. Men’s gender roles are pretty confining still though, so I think it’s good to have a men’s movement…but the current MRM is nothing but a hateful backlash.

    I just don’t know what a lot of men (at least the ones that actually discuss these issues) want anymore…I hear nothing but contradicting messages. They want to “be the man” be the strong ones, have control, but they also don’t want to pay for dinner, keep saying that women are attractive when submissive, yet they also don’t want to do the heavy lifting and jobs that come with the package of being the stronger sex. I also don’t get why more men didn’t protest wars and the military since they made up most of the deaths as soldiers. Instead war is glorified by many men still. Why is that?

    I don’t know, and ultimately I think this is for men to figure out. MRAs and the manosphere overall though are more interested in bashing feminism, women, and trying to roll back the clock on women’s rights and all the progressions made on rape and DV. It’s very fucked up.

    As someone who used to spend a decent amount of time in religious circles, I can safely say that this phenomenon is also present within many Islamic circles. Most mosques I’ve been to in the US have Friday sermons about the virtue of non-sexual affection between Muslim brothers. And even the more “Americanized” imams I’ve heard speak say a lot about not only the importance of such affection, but also the problems with toxic masculinity (although their analysis of toxic masculinity is anything but feminist).

    I think you’re right, but at the very least, most prominent atheists seem to be very much opposed to religious anti-gay bigotry, and that’s probably what contributes to the relative rise in acceptance of homosexuality. And they assume that since only religious people can be against homosexuality, their own views on gay folks are infallible and totally 100% progressive, rational, and scientific.

I think it happened with Clinton but I would imagine it would enrage racist assholes even more to have a black man in office.     Certainly not misandry in academia – the opinions of a student, even the vocal opinions don’t count as academia. Nor do the opinions of professors and university administrators for that matter. Academia is the part where studying happens. The research, the investigation. Not the private opinions of some of the researchers and their students.

    I think this “article” is an asinine exercise in anti-intellectualism that have no patience for these days. News articles, TV news segments and quotes from famous women are the equivalent of academic texts, as is, somehow, the ‘Minnesota Composers Forum Newsletter, 1987′. You don’t need to read, summarize, contextualize or critique a work before you condemn it as misandry, just find a juicy quote that proves it’s EVIL. (Ooga booga!)

    I was in college when the “culture wars”, an ideological scuffle over the Humanities in US colleges, started in the late 1980s. The author should read Allan Bloom’s The Closing of the American Mind to see how a conservative intellectual goes about making a not rock-stupid cultural critique of liberal academia.

  49. This is going to sound glib, but in my little corner of the US, it seems like things really got bad after 9/11. I was sophomore in college back in 2001. I remember being called a traitor for protesting the Iraq War (2nd Iraq War? Gulf War II? Does it have an official name?). Before that, it seemed like the country was swinging more to the right, but 9/11 was like a watershed. And it seems like people got really polarized after that. And liberals, and causes associated with the left, (like feminism) got demonized.

    There was a backlash going on before this. It just seems like the 9/11 attacks gave the right something to scare people with. And the reactionaries got bold. And now we have all these restrictive laws on abortion being passed and Todd Akin talking about “legitimate rape” (and Republicans backing him up) and Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter and all that shit.

    Anyway, that’s my 2 cents. I don’t think it’s that simple. I think probably a multifactorial thing.

    I think it’s an interesting point about people being more open to homosexuality coinciding with a decline in religiosity (is that a word?). It seems like folks most opposed to gay rights are because of (their narrow little interpretation of) religion.

    I think we’ve seen a big shift here. Remember, 10 years ago, anti-sodomy laws were just coming off the books. I remember back then it was still an actual question whether homosexuality was a choice and you could hear liberals talking about how gay people just wanted to have a bunch of risky casual sex. Now all those anti-gay positions have pretty well migrated into the right, and the far right at that (not that there’s any other kind of right at the moment).

    This is true, but it’s important to note that gay acceptance is growing rapidly across all age demographics, even if you account for people moving up in age brackets. For instance, here’s the Gallup numbers; notice that the 2013 acceptance among middle-aged people is higher than the 2001 acceptance among young people, and the 2013 acceptance among older people is higher than the 2001 acceptance among middle-aged people (and about the same as the 2001 acceptance among young people).

    So it isn’t just a matter of young people not having the same prejudices as their parents: People of all ages are actively changing their opinions.

    As for 9/11 being the watershed moment, maybe? I mean, I was 16 at the time, so idk if it was just that I was old enough to understand politics, or they suddenly did actually shift. I certainly don’t remember the recruiters being nearly as pushy before the war though.

  55. There was a noticeable upswing in racism after 9/11, but in terms of gender stuff, nope. I can remember noticing that there was more ambient misogyny floating around than there had been earlier by that point.

  56. Or, actually, that’s too vague. There was a noticeable upswing in racism towards certain specific demographic groups. That was when the “most feared kind of foreigners” focus shifted towards anyone suspected of being Muslim in general, and Arabs and people from Pakistan in particular (with lots of spillover onto people who weren’t Muslim but looked to racists like they “should” be). One of my best buddies in San Francisco at the time was Indian (and Hindu, not that paranoid racists care) and noticed an immediate difference in how people reacted to her.

  57. I could think of so, so many actually “misandrist” things I’ve read or heard lately… none of them from feminists.

    And a disturbingly large portion would be from anti-feminists, MRAs or other not-feminists-at-all.
